Lion’s Mane — What to Know Before You Buy

Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is one of the most intriguing functional mushrooms — prized for centuries in Far Eastern cuisine and traditions, and increasingly studied by modern science. What should you know before reaching for a supplement?

A mushroom that looks like a lion’s mane

Lion’s Mane grows on the trunks of old broadleaf trees and looks like a cascade of white icicles. In Poland it is a rare, protected species, so only fruiting bodies and mycelium from controlled cultivation reach the market. In Asian cuisine it is valued for its meaty texture and delicate, “crab-like” flavour.

What tradition says — and what research says

In traditional Far Eastern recipes, Lion’s Mane accompanied practices supporting concentration and calm of mind. Modern research focuses on its bioactive compounds — erinacines and hericenones — and their potential influence on nerve growth factors. To be honest, though: most available studies are laboratory or animal studies, and the few human trials are small and need confirmation. Lion’s Mane is a promising research direction — not a medicine.

What to look for when choosing a supplement

  • Extract or powder? Extracts (e.g. standardised for polysaccharides) are more concentrated than ground fruiting body.
  • Fruiting body or mycelium? Look for fruiting-body products — they are the best studied.
  • Purity testing. A reliable producer publishes certificates of analysis (heavy metals, microbiology).
  • Cultivated origin — never from wild stands, which are protected in Poland.

Important: dietary supplements do not cure and do not replace a varied diet or medical consultation. If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding — talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
