Threadworms are small intestinal worms, particularly familiar in households with children. Night-time itching around the anus is a typical clue, although not every infected person has symptoms. HSE advice is the starting point for readers in Ireland. A pharmacist can help assess treatment; pregnancy, breastfeeding and children under two need GP advice. P07
Why reinfection happens
Eggs deposited around the anus can contaminate fingers, nails, clothing and household surfaces. Hand-to-mouth transfer perpetuates the cycle. Treatment and hygiene therefore address different stages: medicine acts on the infection, while hygiene reduces repeated exposure. The household plan and any repeat dose should follow current product and professional advice. P06 P07
Wash hands carefully, keep nails short, discourage nail biting, and follow HSE instructions for washing, bedding and cleaning. Avoid shaking contaminated bedding. Coordinating the recommended measures is more useful than repeatedly treating one person while the transmission cycle continues. P07
What does not establish a diagnosis
Teeth grinding, sugar cravings or tiredness alone do not identify threadworms. When testing is needed, the morning tape test targets the site where eggs are deposited. A routine stool sample may miss the relevant evidence. P06
Chanterelle research on liver flukes cannot be substituted for evidence on threadworms. Neither a fungal extract nor a herbal mixture has become an established household threadworm treatment on the basis of the studies reviewed here. Use the linked organism-specific advice and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician. M01 M02 P07
