How to choose a crystal

A stone can be chosen by intention, colour and chakra, by how you want to work with it, or by how much care it needs. This guide brings these perspectives together and suggests what to ask before buying. The “Find your crystal” tool lets you combine several criteria at once.

By intention

Lithotherapy tradition

Practitioners attribute main themes to stones, though authors differ in detail. Calm and harmony are most often linked with amethyst, aquamarine, amazonite and selenite; love and the heart with rose quartz and jadeite; protection and grounding with black tourmaline, smoky quartz, obsidian and hematite; focus and clarity with fluorite, sodalite and rock crystal; communication and truth with sodalite, lapis lazuli, aquamarine and amazonite; will, action and abundance with pyrite, citrine and garnet; intuition and transformation with labradorite, moonstone and malachite. [42] [142] [61] [125] [43] [57] [44] [132] [50] [58] [55] [138] [47] [53] [46] [48] [143] [51] [52] [140]

By colour and chakra

Lithotherapy tradition

In the tradition colour often points to a chakra: black and red stones to the base chakra (black tourmaline, hematite, obsidian, garnet), golden and yellow to the solar plexus (pyrite, citrine), green and pink to the heart (rose quartz, jadeite, malachite, amazonite), blue to the throat (aquamarine, amazonite, sodalite, lapis lazuli), and indigo, violet and white to the third eye and crown (amethyst, sodalite, lapis, selenite, moonstone). This is a general pattern; the cards give exactly what each author assigns. [44] [58] [60] [46] [48] [43] [57] [56] [61] [59] [54] [53] [42] [45] [52]

By how you will use it

Material facts

For jewellery worn every day, hard, resistant stones are better suited: the quartz varieties (7), tourmaline (7), garnets (6.5–7.5) or aquamarine (7.5–8). The feldspars — moonstone, labradorite, amazonite — have cleavage in two directions and poor toughness; for sunstone, another feldspar, GIA recommends protective settings — pendants, earrings and pins rather than rings. Soft selenite (1.5–2), malachite (3.5–4) and fluorite (4) work better on a shelf, altar or in a grid than in a pocket. [1] [2] [22] [8] [155] [27] [10] [6] [5]

By care requirements

Safety and care

If you plan rituals with water or sun, check the card: selenite, malachite and pyrite are cleaned dry, some amethysts and citrines fade in strong light, and for several materials the care status is not yet established. The “Water” and “Light” filters in the atlas let you choose only stones with confirmed advice. [10] [6] [40] [24] [26]

Questions before buying

Material facts

Ask about the exact material, disclosed heating, dyeing, impregnation and origin. GIA notes that much citrine on the market is heated amethyst, and lapis lazuli is sometimes dyed or waxed. An honest disclosure of treatment is worth more than a general assurance of “100% natural”; for a more expensive purchase ask for an independent report. [18] [75] [30]

Choosing by intuition

Editorial suggestion — not a documented rite

Many people simply choose the stone that catches their eye or sits well in the hand — and that too is a good starting point. Our suggestion: choose a stone you like, then read its card and check whether its description in the tradition, its care and its durability suit the way you want to work with it.

How “Find your crystal” works

Editorial suggestion — not a documented rite

The tool combines criteria as an intersection: colour, mineral family, the theme attributed in the tradition, hardness, and water and light status. Themes come only from the practitioner accounts cited on the cards, and the result is a list of stones meeting all the selected conditions — not a ranking or a medical recommendation.
