AVONORIA / GUIDE

Thematic guides: from question to source

The thematic guides group stones by the themes practitioners assign them and by paths of knowledge: collecting, history and delicate specimens. Each theme leads to full cards in Avonoria.

Calm and harmony

Lithotherapy tradition

Stones of calm in practitioners’ accounts are above all amethyst (the “stone of spirituality and contentment”, shedding the day’s weight), aquamarine (cooling emotions, easing conflict), amazonite (the “peacemaker stone”), selenite (calming erratic emotions) and moonstone (inner peace, understanding emotions). [121] [42] [59] [61] [125] [52]

Love and the heart

Lithotherapy tradition

Rose quartz is the “heart stone” of unconditional love in both sources, including love of oneself. Jadeite is meant to soothe and support the heart, garnet is the “Stone of Commitment”, and malachite opens the heart and helps build relationships based on love rather than need. [43] [122] [57] [143] [56] [140]

Protection and grounding

Lithotherapy tradition

Black tourmaline is the “premier talisman of protection”, smoky quartz a “Stone of Power” and anchor in the natural world, obsidian a “psychic vacuum cleaner”, hematite one of the strongest grounding stones, and labradorite and pyrite are meant to form a protective shield around the aura. [123] [132] [50] [58] [134] [124]

Focus and study

Lithotherapy tradition

Fluorite is a stone of clarity and orderly thought, sodalite the “Logic Stone” and a writer’s talisman, rock crystal an amplifier of intention said to open the mind, and hematite helps anchor attention on the task. [55] [138] [47] [130] [58]

Communication and truth

Lithotherapy tradition

The throat stones are sodalite, lapis lazuli, aquamarine and amazonite: practitioners link them with speaking the truth, expressing thoughts and easing difficult conversations; for Crystal Vaults lapis is a universal sign of wisdom and truth. [54] [137] [59] [144]

Will, action and abundance

Lithotherapy tradition

Pyrite is one of the strongest stones of determination and the “stone of hidden fire”, citrine a stone of manifestation and the “Merchant’s Stone”, and garnet awakens inner fire and life force. [46] [124] [131] [60]

Intuition and transformation

Lithotherapy tradition

Labradorite is the “Magician’s Fuel” and a stone of magic, moonstone a talisman of the inward journey and intuition, malachite the “Stone of Transformation”, and amethyst supports contact with higher frequencies and the growth of intuition. [51] [134] [136] [140] [42]

Sleep and dreams

Lithotherapy tradition

Jadeite is the “Dream Stone”, sodalite is meant to help one remember dreams and practise lucid dreaming, rose quartz to bring beautiful dreams, and amazonite to let matters needing resolution appear in the symbolism of dreams. [141] [138] [122] [144]

Mineral families in a collection

Material facts

Five atlas stones are varieties of quartz (rock crystal, amethyst, rose quartz, citrine, smoky quartz), three are feldspars (labradorite, moonstone, amazonite), and alongside them are a rock (lapis lazuli), a volcanic glass (obsidian) and a group of minerals (garnets). Comparing stones within a family is a good way to learn mineralogy. [1] [31] [32] [19] [11] [20] [34] [22]

Delicate specimens

Safety and care

Selenite (1.5–2), malachite (3.5–4), fluorite (4) and pyrite need particular care: softness, cleavage and reactions in storage are separate issues. Before cleaning or a ritual, open the card and the care guide. [10] [6] [5] [40]

A historical path

History and beliefs

The stones with the richest documented history in the atlas are rock crystal (Pliny’s ice, John Dee’s spheres), amethyst (lapidaries and Pliny’s scepticism), lapis lazuli (Egypt and Mesopotamia), hematite (seals and amulets), obsidian (the mirrors of Mexico) and garnet (carbunculus).
