Meditation and intention practice

Meditation with a stone and intention work are at the heart of modern lithotherapy. This guide gathers the practices practitioners describe — holding a stone, laying it on the body, speaking an intention, gazing and working with sleep — and offers a simple sequence that we clearly mark as an editorial suggestion.

What intention means in this tradition

Lithotherapy tradition

An intention is a clearly named goal or wish that the practitioner “entrusts” to a stone. The Crystal Council advises speaking it aloud while holding amazonite firmly, speaking directly to garnet about what the heart truly wants, and holding citrine each day, “letting the universe hear” one’s goals — reminding that it is not only about thinking and wanting but about focus and action. According to Crystal Vaults amazonite amplifies intentions because it works through the throat chakra; for citrine the same source cautions that the “power of attraction” should be used only for the highest good. [61] [60] [48] [144] [131]

Meditation with a stone in the hand

Personal / spiritual practice

The simplest form is holding a stone during quiet sitting. Crystal Vaults describes a pyrite in each hand as a way to restore balance quickly and to end a meditation, “bringing” the energy into the body; smoky quartz as ideal for grounding the spirit and stilling racing thoughts; labradorite as a stone in which humanity can be seen as a “being of light”. The Crystal Council writes that rose quartz in meditation immediately “connects” with the heart, and that hematite helps anchor attention in the present. [124] [132] [134] [43] [58]

Stones on the body, layouts and grids

Personal / spiritual practice

Stones are also laid on the body, usually lying down: on the forehead at the third eye (sodalite and lapis lazuli according to Crystal Vaults, moonstone according to The Crystal Council), on the throat (amazonite), on the heart (rose quartz), on the solar plexus (pyrite) or at the feet (obsidian for “anchoring” in difficult times). Crystal Vaults describes layouts with smoky quartz at the instep of each foot and at the knees, where a termination pointing towards the body is meant to draw in light and one pointing away to lead heavy energy out; black tourmaline is laid at the knees and feet with its termination towards the toes. [138] [137] [52] [61] [43] [124] [133] [132] [123]

Personal / spiritual practice

Grids are arrangements of several stones around a person or object. Crystal Vaults describes a circle of six fluorite octahedra in whose centre one sits for a relaxing meditation, and a ring of eight tumbled black tourmalines as a “protection circle”; The Crystal Council a grid of pyrite, quartz or selenite and chrysocolla, joining will with communication. [139] [123] [46]

Gazing and divination

Lithotherapy tradition

Gazing into a polished surface is one of the oldest practices. Crystal Vaults recommends obsidian slabs, mirrors and spheres for insight in meditation, noting that meditation with a black obsidian sphere can be very intense — it advises undertaking it with an experienced guide, no more than once every four months, and covering the sphere after use. In a practice of Cassandra Eason quoted by Crystal Vaults, a pale blue moonstone is laid on a yellow cloth on the night of the full moon and the play of light is watched while waiting for images. The older history of crystal balls, beryls and mirrors is told in the guide “History of crystals”. [133] [136]

Sleep and dreams

Personal / spiritual practice

Many stones are placed under the pillow or on a bedside table. Crystal Vaults describes sodalite supporting restful sleep, dream recall and lucid dreaming, amazonite with which matters needing resolution are said to appear in the symbolism of dreams, rose quartz as a “sleep crystal” bringing beautiful dreams, and garnet under the pillow as protection against bad dreams (after Dorothee Mella). In practitioners’ accounts jadeite is a “dream stone”, placed under the pillowcase or taped to the forehead for lucid dreaming. [138] [144] [122] [143] [57] [141]

A simple sequence to begin with

Editorial suggestion — not a documented rite

Sit comfortably with the stone in your hands and look at it for a moment: its colour, weight and temperature. Take a few calm breaths. Say one sentence of intention quietly, in the present tense and in plain words. Sit in silence for a few minutes, then write down one thing you will do about it tomorrow. Put the stone where you will see it — let it remind you of the decision. This is an Avonoria editorial suggestion, not a documented ritual of a particular tradition.

Practical notes

Safety and care

Never leave candles unattended. Do not place clear spheres and crystals in a sunny window: in January 2024 in Epping a crystal ball focused the sun’s rays and started a fire. Choose stones for the body without sharp edges, and keep small specimens out of reach of children and pets. [135] [79]
