Ruby is the red variety of corundum. Its vivid colour does not mean that every red stone is ruby, and a red rock containing small corundum grains is not equivalent to a transparent gem. This entry covers natural material; laboratory-grown ruby requires a clear label.
The Crystal Council associates ruby with nobility, courage and personal determination. Life-force and chi terminology describes spiritual energy in this account, while the root chakra points towards grounding and persistence. The authors emphasise focusing on a goal and maintaining engagement despite obstacles. Among suggested combinations, blue sapphire represents self-control alongside ruby's strength, while rose quartz develops the theme of affection and passion. Dream-related interpretations also appear, belonging to this practitioner's beliefs rather than to the mineralogical characteristics of corundum. [176]
A second account and differences of emphasis
Crystal Vaults associates ruby with passion, closeness and courage in expressing affection. Its solar image of an inner flame develops through devotion, romantic connection and admiration, including admiration held at a distance. Ruby becomes a talisman of commitment and a reminder of the value of personal desires. The Crystal Council emphasises determination towards a goal and personal strength more strongly. Both accounts use intense colour as a symbolic setting, but distribute emphasis differently between persistent action and emotional closeness. [220]

An Avonoria editorial suggestion
Editorial suggestion — not a documented rite
In our interpretation, red can mark a concern deserving attention instead of a demand for constant stimulation. Courage is worth distinguishing from pressure to take risks. A symbolic ruby can also remind us to rest after effort; the most expensive gemstone is unnecessary for that meaning to make sense.
Set ruby in a box beside your notebook. Complete the sentence: ‘Today I will dare to say clearly…’. Then write a safety condition and a boundary you do not wish to cross. Practise the sentence aloud at a calm pace. After the conversation, revisit the note and assess whether your words matched your values. This is preparation for action, not a test of a stone's protective power.
When working with passion, separate interest from an expected outcome. Choose an activity you want to revisit rather than something you must immediately win at. Allocate only the time you actually have. Ruby can symbolise lasting commitment, including quiet effort unseen by others. Displaying expensive jewellery is unnecessary for retaining the chosen meaning.
Scope of the sources: The correspondences above document contemporary practitioner approaches. The practice is original, not a reconstructed historical rite. Choose only a meaning that suits you. Returning the stone to a clean stand can mark a symbolic ending; physical cleaning is covered separately in the card.
The colour spans different reds; transparency, inclusions and cutting change its appearance. Mohs hardness 9 concerns scratch resistance, not the resistance of every filled fracture to cleaning agents. [186]
Reference properties
A photograph and trade name cannot establish a particular specimen's composition, treatment or origin. Observe in ordinary light; do not use flame, acid or scratching tests.
Corundum crystals; faceted stones and cabochons. [186]
Common lookalikes and imitations
Red spinel
Why it looks similar
Both can be red, transparent gems.
What can help distinguish it
GIA describes historical confusion of spinel with ruby. Spinel differs in composition and has hardness 8; ruby is corundum with hardness 9. Gemmological assessment is needed, not a scratch test.
What a photograph cannot establish
A photograph and trade name cannot establish a particular specimen's composition, treatment or origin. Observe in ordinary light; do not use flame, acid or scratching tests.
Chromium produces the red colour. GIA describes both marble-related rubies and basalt-related material; differences in iron content affect fluorescence, among other features. No single shade within this variety can establish its mining country. [186]

Separate three questions: is it corundum, did it grow naturally, and how was it treated? Request disclosure of heating and fracture filling, and a report on that individual specimen when valuable. Do not substitute an AAA grade or an energy description. Filled material needs different care from unfilled ruby.
GIA permits gentle washing of appropriately identified ruby, but recommends a damp cloth for dyed or filled material. Glass fillings can be damaged even by mild acids. With unknown treatment, avoid ultrasound, steam, salt and chemical baths.
Storage and specimen form
Store separately in soft wrapping, away from heaters and windowsills. Do not use salt or prolonged soaking as a universal care method.
Store securely, protect sharp edges and check settings. Do not place stones in the mouth.
Do not grind or drill at home; this card concerns the intact specimen, not its dust. [37]
FAQ
Is laboratory-grown ruby a glass imitation?
No: laboratory-grown describes how ruby was grown. An imitation is a different material with a similar appearance. Origin and treatment need disclosure regardless of symbolic meaning.
What research says — in brief
The cited clinical trial concerned rose quartz, not this atlas entry. It does not establish a therapeutic effect for this material; the symbolism is presented for understanding traditions and personal practice. [159]
